Two Chicago Urban Farms Among Top 10 in America
Natural Home honors City Farm and Green Youth Farm for sustainable initiatives
CHICAGO (Feb. 18, 2009) – Natural Home magazine has named Chicago’s City Farm and Green Youth Farm as two of the top 10 in the country.
Natural Home selected City Farm for it efforts to convert vacant city lots into green landscapes. These lots become an asset to the city by informing visitors about urban farming and providing nutritious, local produce at the same time. City Farm operates a farm and a farm stand between Chicago’s low-income Cabrini Green neighborhood and its upper-end Gold Coast.
Green Youth Farm sits on a one-acre lot in suburban North Chicago. Green Youth employs high school students at its organic farms and sells produce at several markets, including the Chicago Botanic Garden. It was selected for its commitment to teach high school students about organic gardening. Participants learn how to work together as a team, gain valuable job skills and obtain knowledge about the food they eat.
“The Top 10 Urban Farms list is a fun way to recognize urban farms that we believe are doing an exceptional job of building a community, where people can learn about food and buy great local produce. It’s a terrific move toward getting people involved in sustainable projects in an urban setting. Plus, these farms often create jobs and revenue for the city through the sale of produce to city dwellers and restaurants,” said Robyn Griggs Lawrence, editor in chief of Natural Home.
