Natural Home celebrates 10 years
Green-living publication reaches milestone, outlasts 82 percent of magazines launched in 1999
Topeka, Kan. (April 16, 2009) — Green lifestyle magazine Natural Home celebrates its 10th anniversary with its May-June issue. The issue, now on newsstands, will feature the editors’ and readers’ favorite homes and gardens covered by the magazine over the last decade and look at the future of green building and design.
Since Ogden Publications acquired Natural Home in November 2005 from Interweave Press, the magazine has increased its paid circulation by 50 percent, to 75,000. Interest in Natural Home’s online content continues to grow as well. Unique monthly visitors to NaturalHomeMagazine.com have jumped 343 percent in the same period, including a 65 percent traffic hike between March 2008 and March 2009.
“Natural Home continues to succeed because home is the place where everybody has control over their environmental impact. It moderates one of the most interesting of all the conversations around sustainability,” says Bryan Welch, publisher and editorial director of Ogden Publications. Ogden also publishes eco-conscious titles Mother Earth News, Utne Reader and The Herb Companion.
According to Dr. Samir Husni (“Mr. Magazine”), only 18 percent of 1999’s 360 magazine launches publishing four or more issues per year are still in business.
When Natural Home launched May 1, 1999, the green movement had yet to go mainstream. Natural Home was one of the first publications to bring together green building, architecture and green living — without sacrificing beauty and comfort.
Editor-in-Chief Robyn Griggs Lawrence joined the magazine in its third issue as architecture editor. Reflecting on Natural Home’s evolution, she says, “Early on, we featured a lot of homes that some people considered unattainable for most readers. The magazine is now geared toward homeowners who seek sustainability, beauty and conscientious living, but who don’t necessarily feel compelled to protest for climate change or always eat organic.”
Looking ahead, Lawrence says Natural Home will continue to push the envelope, giving readers information and resources to fight greenwashing and discern whether products are green. She adds, “The green standards we use in choosing homes to feature will become more strenuous as technology and industry advances — and the threat of climate change continues to unfold.”
