Barack Obama Appoints Van Jones “Special Advisor for Green Jobs”

Those who were worried that President Obama would become lax about his green initiatives can rest a little easier. Van Jones, founder of Green for All, an advocacy group that works to bring green jobs to the underprivileged, and author of The Green Collar Economy (HarperOne, 2008) has been appointed the Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise & Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ).

As the Special Advisor, Jones’ duties will include “helping to shape and implement job-generating climate policy; working to ensure equal protection and equal opportunity in the administration’s climate and energy proposals; and publicly advocating the administration's environmental and energy agenda,” according to a press release from Green for All.

With Jones’ departure next week, Green for All will need a new leader, and Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins is answering the call. Currently, Ellis-Lamkins heads up the South Bay AFL-CIO Labor Council and Working Partnerships USA, and has not only expanded health-care access across California, but has also helped raise the minimum wage twice for low-income families in the South Bay, says Green for All. Later this month, she will be joining Green for All as its Chief Executive Officer. In the same press release, Jones said that “Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins is one of the nation's most brilliant, inspirational and creative problem solvers for working families. She has a proven track record of success. Under her leadership, Green For All will deliver on the promise of a green economy that is strong enough to lift people out of poverty."
