Eating local can be challenging at times, but with the application Locavore 1.0 for the iPhone and iPod Touch, it has never been easier. With a touch of a button you can find local, sustainabily harvested food in your community, and you can track what’s in season across America.

Buster McLeod and Matt Hickey created the application, affectionately know as an “app,” to assist people in eating and choosing local food. The app uses the built-in GPS technology in the iPhone and iPod Touch to track what fruits and vegetables are currently in season and what produce will be available soon. The creators partnered with Local Harvest and the Natural Resources Defense Council to track farmers’ production and farmer’s markets throughout the U.S.

Locavore 1.0 follows 234 common and rare fruits and vegetables. In addition to tracking produce, you can find great recipes from Epicurious. Each produce information sheet is supplemented with a color image for those rare and unknown fruits and vegetables.

The application is now available at the iTunes App Store for $2.99 for the first 1,000 customers.
