THE BAD NEWS: Energy price hikes hit hard this winter—and there’s no reprieve in sight. Add to your personal financial loss the trillions of pounds of greenhouse gas emissions generated by power plants, and our energy future looks pretty grim—for us and for the environment.

THE GOOD NEWS: Brighten the future by simply replacing burned-out bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFL). Replacing a 100-watt incandescent with a 32-watt CFL, which gives the same brightness, can save you at least $30 in energy costs over the bulb’s life (7,000 to 15,000 hours). And, if every American household installed the ultra-efficient CFL bulb in only one room, power plants would release 1 trillion pounds less CO2 into the atmosphere annually. (EnergyStar.gov)
