How eco-friendly is your hotel stay? A number of organizations certify hotels as “environmentally friendly,” but beware: Some hotels simply buy into membership programs. Look for true certification programs that require hotels to meet stringent standards.

NORDIC SWAN: A voluntary, neutral seal-of-approval program that certifies products, including hotels, in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, and Denmark.
GREEN HOTELS ASSOCIATION: While not a certification program, this organization offers a membership program for environmentally minded hotels. Its international membership listing is available online.
