While all wood products, including paper, should be conserved, there are ways to lessen their impact on forests. That’s where Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) steps in.

What it is: A nonprofit organization that encourages responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC’s high standards ensure forestry is environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable.

What the label means: Wood products that carry FSC certification have been sourced from a forest where trees are sustainably harvested, ecosystems and biological diversity conserved, and threatened or endangered species protected. Sustainable logging advances the economic and social well-being of forest workers and local communities.

What to do: Ask for the FSC label when purchasing wood or paper products.

Where to shop: Home Depot, Lowe’s Home Improvement Centers and Kinko’s, as well as many other retailers.
