The world’s largest sewer water recycling plant begins production today. Located in Orange County, the plant processes 70 million gallons of sewage daily, refining it into clean, drinkable water.

But the refined water won’t be directly routed to residents’ homes. Instead, the recycled wastewater will be fed back into the soil, with half providing a barrier between rising seawater and groundwater reservoirs and the other half will slowly seep into aquifers that provide the county with tap water.

Orange County began recycling sewage in the 1970s to create a barrier against encroaching seawater. The new system cost  $481 million.
